Lotf essay

In the novel "lord of the flies" a group of boys flying away from a war,are shot down on to a island. The boys all come from a world ruled by grown-ups and rules. So when they crash on the island there first thought is having fun. They soon realize that the order given by the grown-ups was what was keeping them alive. That order is symbolized by the boys hair, as the story goes on there hair grows and the order slowly slips away.

In the beginning the boys have not yet realized how serious there situation is. As soon as they do they elect a leader,Ralph,(23). At this time the boys have short hair and follow the rules and jobs given by Ralph. There is one black sheep though,Jack, he belives that he should be the leader and at every meeting he points out Ralphs mess ups (22-23). Jack is building an idea of being his own leader and that hunting is the most important thing to do. As he does this he corrupts the boys to think the same.

As there hair grows, so does the idea that "we don't have it that bad." The idea of let's have fun returns as well. The rules Ralph made are now not being followed and jobs are not being done. Ralph recognizes the island losing sight of there main goal and calls for a meeting. As he is starts his speech he suddenly forgets what he was going to say(128). Jack used this as an example that Ralph was losing his leadership ability. That was not the only thing the island was losing, it was losing order.

As the boys hair reaches it's longest length Ralph has lost all little order he had left. Jack finally hits his boiling point and breaks away from the tribe to create his own(133). As he does this he ask the others if they would join him, all that is left of the first tribe is Piggy, Ralph and Simon. The boys build a hate of each other that pushes them to murder. Simon and Piggy are both killed by Jack's tribe. As all of this is happening Ralph has the shortest hair symbolizing that he is the last sign that order is still on the island.

Golding uses the boys hair throughout the novel "Lord of the Flies" as a symbol of order and hope of being rescued very well. The hair just goes to show that when a human is taken away from a world of order he cares for only the happiness of himself. That is exactly what happens to the boys, Jack brain washes the boys to thinking that it is better on the island then at home. Sadly cause of that they kill two boys for no reason besides "fun". Jack's hope search for fun ends up burning the island to the ground.

Golding is trying to bring the readers attention to how all of the other boys hair continues to grow, except for Piggy. Piggy from day one has been picked on and a scapegoat cause of his adult look on there situation, and the boys don't want a person looking over there shoulder telling them what to think and do.As each day passes the conch;the object that  gives the right to talk, seems to drift away from Piggy. Also the tribe begins to experience there civilized nature slip away and savage like mentality set in. This is why Golding mentions the boys hair because it is symbolic to there common sense leaving. Except for one; Piggy, his hair continues to stay short because of his adult mindset. All throughout the novel many more symbolic like details will be thrown into the fact that all order and also Piggy will slowly diminished to nothing.

Golding is trying to bring the readers attention to how all of the other boys hair continues to grow, except for Piggy. Piggy from day one has been the voice of reason for all of Ralph's decisions, and day by day the boys mute him out. The tribe has begun to experience there civilized nature slip away and become more and more like savages. The reason why Golding mention the boys hair is because it is symbolic to there common sence leaving, Piggy's hair continues to stay short because of his adult mindset. All throughout the novel many more symbolic like details will be thrown into the fact that all order on the island is slowly diminishing.

Ralph was annoyed and, for the moment, defeated. He felt himself facing something ungraspable. The eyes that looked so intently at him were without humor (37).

When roger opened his eyes and saw him, a darker shadow crept beneath the swarthiness of his skin; but Jack noticed nothing. He was eager, impatient, beckoning, so that Roger went to him (62).

He was the only boy on the island whose hair never seemed to grow (64).
